Magic mushroom is the safest recreational drug, and those who take it are the wisest and well prepared according to the 2017 Global Drug Survey. Of the nearly 10,000 people who take it, only 0.2% need immediate medical attention.

But magic mushrooms, or psilocybin mushrooms, contain class A medicinal compounds under the Drug Abuse Act 1971 – such as heroin and cocaine.

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, director of psychedelic research at Imperial College London, explains that psilocybin is similar to LSD, but weaker and mimics serotonin activity in the brain. This reduces brain activity at information transfer centers such as the thalamus, which are located just above the brain stem.

Whatever the mechanism, mushrooms can make you happy, fully with the world and very insightful. Colors and geometric patterns can be bright. Carhart-Harris says the magic mushroom is not really an amusement drug: "It's more of a self-test drug," he said.

However, the environment is critical to positive experiences – people need space, a "conscious caregiver" to look after them – and perhaps confirmation that they are not going crazy. Carhart-Harris prefers the term "challenging experiences" over "bad trips": mushrooms can cause anxiety, panic, and depersonalization – but research shows that people still value those experiences.
